Coin na mBuitléarach
Fadó bhíodh Riobard an máistir agus Tadhg Balbh Ó Conchúir ag
maíomh as na coin a bhí ag na Buitléaraigh sa Choireán. Nuair a chuala
Seán Usae é sin chum sé an dán seo á gcáineadh toisc go raibh siad “ag
sodar i ndiaidh na n-uasal.”
“Thiar ar an gCoireán tá gasra grámhar
Cois trá gan buaireamh
Go bhfuil a liú go hárd
Is gach lá’cu ag gluaiseacht.
B’fhearra do Thadhg is don mháistir
An rámhainn nó an sluasad
Ná bheith ag déanamh dánta
Do choileánaibh uaisle.”
Pádraig Ó Conaill Ceapa na gCrann sa Dromad.
Butler’s Hounds
Long ago Riobard Harris and Tadhg Balbh were boasting and making
versus about the Butler hounds. Seán Usae, another verse-maker,
heard this and he composed the following, mocking their pandering to
the so-called nobility.
Behind in Waterville
There are friendly people,
Beside the Strand
Without Sorrow or care.
When the hunt is on
They are out on the hillside
With wild halloos after stricken hares.
Making rhymes for the hounds of the gentry
Is a a pastime of two I well know.
Far better to practice the spade and the shovel
Their garden would pay them much more.
