What's New
Music, song, story and nature have been brought together for a unique experience at Derrynane House & Gardens, through the Daniel O’Connell Heritage Trail. This self-guided tour through the gardens of Derrynane is a collaboration between the Binneas Collection and the OPW. The trail works by scanning a QR code on each point of discovery along the trail, where a beautiful piece of music connected to O'Connell plays, providing a most immersive experience.

The digitising of the manuscripts and paper material has started with 2400 pieces scanned to date. A second batch of the Binneas Collection cassette tapes have been delivered to the studio for digitisation. The reel - reels have been digitised and the editing process has begun on them. The archivist is working closely with the sound engineer to identify tracks to convert to mp3 ready for upload to the website. The webpages that will host the material are being created and the next batch of recordings for digitisation have been selected. The process of uploading the digitised material to the website will start in mid July.

The ‘Binneas’ Daniel O’Connell Heritage Trail at Derrynane House will be launched on Saturday 7th June, as part of the ‘Discover Derrynane’ weekend 6th -8th June 2025. The trail is also available virtually on the Binneas Website.
‘The Heritage Council’ have provided funding to digitise a large part of the Binneas Collection. The material includes sound recordings of music, song and story of South Kerry. The recorded material is being digitised, edited and enhanced by ‘Creation Studio’ Teeromoyle. The printed and photographic material will be scanned locally. This process will be ongoing throughout the length of the project, and the material will be added to the website on a regular basis.
The digital map link is located on the main navigation bar. Pins on the map above will link to the material relevant to that pin. As material has been identified for digitisation a red pin will be added to the map. When the material has been uploaded the pin will change to blue.
Some pins will link to a large volume of material and others to a single song or photograph.
All new material, historical information and suggestions for inclusion that will enhance the project are welcome.
A fruitful trip to County Clare to catch up with Jim Carroll and return the Mikeen McCarthy reel to reels. These recordings are an invaluable collection of song, story, folklore and way of life captured on tape of life around Cahersiveen. Jim is always a deep well of knowledge and I enjoy the time spent with him. I also had the opportunity to scan some original ballad sheets in his collection. I also returned with two kittens!
