Seán Fox
(Cahersiveen)
A piper who lived on the outskirts of the town of Cahersiveen in the nineteenth century.
Seán Fox was a great musician. He played the pipes and the flute and he was the finest player on the jew's harp in Ireland. He used to play the 'Fox Chase on two of them at the same time. Fox had a thatched cottage by the side of the road going into Cahirciveen but only four could dance at a time in it. They had to take another house near the potato market on fair days and Wednesdays. You could not get near it with the people gathered outside listening to the music. Fox was the finest piper between there and Dublin.
Before that Fox had played at Crois Cheann na hEich (Kenneigh), the boys and girls paying him so much a month for playing for them on Sundays during the summer months. 62 Fox was reputed to have had a lot of money; his wife, Mary Barton, used to travel around with him. They had no family.
