The Valentia Island Manuscript
These pages were given to the Binneas Collection by Dan Herlihy, The great Slaibh Luachra accordion player from Ballydesmond. I met him on many occasions and he gave a lecture in Ballinskelligs at one of the first Binneas Festivals. I often played with him in ‘The Grand’ in Killarney. He produced two important books about Sliabh Luachra musicians, and it was whilst he was collecting the material he came across theses pages. They are written on the pages of a list of voters for Valentia island for 1877. One of the tunes it contains is of Scottish origin and it is likely that the person who transcribed the tunes was connected with the cable station.
