Binneas is inviting users of the site to transcribe, on a voluntary basis, the songs and other material in the Binneas Collection. The transcribing of the songs from the older Irish script into the modern script makes the material more accessible by enabling users to search the text of transcribed songs in their entirety as opposed to viewing the manuscripts as images only.
Information on the material is welcome, as this will allow a greater understanding of the material in its historical and social context. The local collective knowledge is an invaluable resource to draw on.
Crowdsourced transcription is a recognised approach that helps digital humanities projects to make valuable archive material more accessible to the public. As a result of the Binneas meitheal’s community engagement these texts are gradually becoming available to the community, researchers and others across the globe in a fully searchable format.
The generosity and goodwill of the community have been vital in amassing the Binneas Collection. The Binneas meitheal’s community engagement initiative continues that tradition.
If you would like to help the Binneas collection in any of the ways described above, please contact Binneas at binneas@eircom.net
