Another Studio Sound Enhancement Example

Here is another example of the magic that is being created by ‘Creation Studio’, Teeromoyle, who are working on the sound recordings in the Binneas Collection. Many of the recordings require the patience to strip away the layers of ambient noise and distortion caused by the degradation of the tapes through inadequate storage and the passage of time. Often the recording conditions and microphone positioning weren’t ideal. What is important however is what was captured, the echoes of a past generation. Luckily the Sound Engineer ‘Terry Gordon’ has patience in abundance and is carefully working through the material with the assistance of the archivist. His technical ability is amazing, carefully identifying frequencies and removing the layers of noise to reveal the voice underneath. Here is a ‘Before’ and ‘After’ sample’

Digitisation Update

A fruitful trip to County Clare to catch up with Jim Carroll and return the Mikeen McCarthy reel to reels. These recordings are an invaluable collection of song, story, folklore and way of life captured on tape of life around Cahersiveen. Jim is always a deep well of knowledge and I enjoy the time spent with him. I also had the opportunity to scan some original ballad sheets in his collection. I also returned with two kittens!

This self-guided tour through the gardens of Derrynane is a collaboration between the Binneas Collection and the OPW. The trail works by scanning a QR code on each point of discovery along the trail, where a beautiful piece of music connected to O'Connell plays, providing a most immersive experience.

The Binneas Heritage Project Progress Map

‘The Heritage Council’ have provided funding to digitise a large part of the Binneas Collection. The material includes sound recordings of music, song and story of South Kerry. The recorded material is being digitised, edited and enhanced by ‘Creation Studio’ Teeromoyle. The printed and photographic material will be scanned locally. This process will be ongoing throughout the length of the project, and the material will be added to the website on a regular basis.

The digital map link is located on the main navigation bar. Pins on the map above will link to the material relevant to that pin. As material has been identified for digitisation a red pin will be added to the map. When the material has been uploaded the pin will change to blue.

Some pins will link to a large volume of material and others to a single song or photograph.

All new material, historical information and suggestions for inclusion that will enhance the project are welcome.
